Carl Capotorto was born and raised in the Pelham Parkway section of the Bronx, New York. A writer and actor, he received a B.A. in Liberal Arts from SUNY Purchase in 1981 and an M.F.A. in Playwriting from Columbia University School of Arts in 1984. His plays have been produced at the National Playwrights Conference of the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center (1984, 1985, 1999), Yale Repertory Theater, Theater for the New City, Ensemble Studio Theater and elsewhere. He received grants and fellowships in playwriting and screenwriting from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, the Edward Albee Foundation and the Chesterfield Writer's Project at Universal Studios. Carl has written and developed original projects for television with executive producers Christine Vachon and Kevin Turen (for Logo TV, 2014), and with executive producers Will Scheffer and Mark V. Olsen, creators of Getting On and Big Love (for HBO, 2010). He is the author of Twisted Head: An Italian-American Memoir (Random House, 2008), based on his solo show of the same name. His plays have been presented at Yale Repertory Theatre, the Vineyard Theatre, the Actors Studio, and dozens of other venues around the country. He has an M.F.A. in playwriting from Columbia University (1984) and has received grants in playwriting and screenplay writing from the National Endowment for the Arts (1986), the New York Foundation for the Arts (1988), the Chesterfield Writers' Film Project at Universal Studios (1992), and elsewhere. As an actor, Carl played Little Paulie Germani on HBO's The Sopranos (2000-07) and has performed principal roles in the movies Riding in Cars with Boys (2001), Mac (1992), Jungle Fever (1991), American Blue Note (1988), Five Corners (1987), and others. Additionally, he has appeared in short films by John Patrick Shanley, Tim Robbins, John Turturro, Peter MacNicol, and Adrian Grenier. Carl is a native of the Bronx and currently lives in Manhattan.
