The X-Files - Season 10 Episode 06: My Struggle II
The X-Files is coming back to TV! The season opens with reuniting Agent Mulder with Dana Scully after the collapse of their relationship when Mulder is engaged by a TV host and follows the pair of FBI agents as they investigate the strange and unexplained.
I appreciated the jarring variation of The X-Files's revival. It kept me guessing. It surprised me, and sometimes frustrated me, and occasionally delighted me. It read to me a little like televisional jazz.
"My Struggle II" is bewildering television. It tells a story it simply did not have the time to finish, and will frustratingly rely on a renewal from FOX to complete.
We still love this show, for all its flaws, including the way it can still drive us insane. But at this point, the roller coaster is clearly shaking apart. And Season 10, on balance, was a disappointing ride.
Now that the miniseries (or tenth season, or whatever you want to call it) is over, and ended so badly, it's easy to say this never should've happened. It's easy to scoff at anyone foolish enough to believe it might have worked.
For the most part, I just loved it, and it was so great having Mulder & Scully in my life again after loving the show since its original run back in the day.
Unfortunately, the episode often feels more silly than serious, and is further proof that the show's larger mythology has only managed to bog the series down with its self-importance.
