After thirty years, the series has become the authority. Newer shows are taking on new ground, but The Simpsons are still shooting for something less than redemption.
[The premiere] at least indicates an interest in character-focused stories going forward that's a lot more intriguing than any splashy stunt casting or reality-busting fantasy would be.
The end result is the thirtieth time The Simpsons has begun a new season, and though it's not perfect, it does feel refreshingly reminiscent of the series' better days.
