Stephen Colbert took over as host, executive producer and writer of THE LATE SHOW on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. The comedy-variety-talk show is broadcast five nights a week from the Ed Sullivan theater in New York.
This was one of the most confident debuts in years. Not everything was perfect, but everything felt thought through. That's not nothing, and it bodes well for what's to come.
That said, the first Colbert Late Show... was promising if not perfect, ranging from sharp meta-late-night humor and funny politically tinged bits to the kind of bland chitchat that makes the network late-night talk show an often frustrating genre.
There are hints of the wackiness and pointed commentary Colbert displayed while hosting The Colbert Report, but it's been slightly mellowed, better to conform to a wider, more mainstream audience.
The inaugural Late Show with Stephen Colbert was so packed with comedy bits, special guests and music, it went several minutes overtime - but it didn't feel long. It felt good.
