Rick and Morty - Season 3 Episode 02: Rickmancing the Stone
Rick & Morty has become one of Adult Swim’s signature series and one of the hottest sci-fi comedies on TV. Season 3 sees mad scientist Rick Sanchez moves in with his daughter's family after disappearing for 20 years and involves them in his wacky adventures.
Like the best episodes of Rick and Morty, when you look back at it, you realize that so much stuff took place in such a short amount of time. That it all holds up is no small feat.
"Rickmancing the Stone" is one of those rare Rick and Morty episodes that leans more toward drama than comedy. It's sure to go down as a series favorite because the show's execution of its Mad Max-esque world is so dead-on.
"Rickmancing The Stone" might not be quite as high-concept in its sci-fi as the premiere, the use of post-apocalyptic movie tropes as a playground for children to work through trauma is clever as hell, and the result is hilarious and briefly moving.
As a means of laying out thematic elements that will play out through the rest of the season, it's plenty enjoyable, but it wasn't a standout episode of the series for me.
"Rickmancing the Stone" may not have broken new ground with its Mad Max parody, but it still delivered plenty of humor as Morty and Summer both dealt with family drama in their own, terribly unhealthy ways.
If the first episode of the show's first season recognizes that Rick screwed up in his past, and admits it is time that he take responsibility for his mistakes, the second episode is all about the power of escapism.
