What I've enjoyed about this series is how it touches on the gray areas of ethical and moral issues... Kelley thrives as a dramatist who can make humorless issues entertaining TV.
Fences just loved a good, old-fashioned legal debate, and while the show's various shenanigans are not at all realistic, the strong feelings -- particularly strong feelings of empathy-driven ambivalence -- are not.
Typically, script by creator/exec producer David E. Kelley manages to score strong points on both sides of a controversial subject while providing one of the funniest shows on television. And it doesn't even have (or need) a laugh track.
