You wanna punish a man? Send him to Oz: the name on the street for the Oswald Maximum Security Penitentiary. Viewers are exposed to drugs, murder, nudity, rape and enough foul language to make someone wince.
Oz is rough, gritty, and knocks you for a loop. It's the type of drama that will never be possible on network television no matter how many curse words the censors eventually allow on the air.
It's the routine of Oz that is so punishing here, like being confined for an hour with something unpleasant and oppressive. It's quality work, but watch it at your own risk.
Last year HBO introduced "Oz," a prison drama by Tom Fontana, executive producer of "Homicide: Life on the Street."... Pressed to choose, "Oz" is the superior offering. And that's saying something.
Oz is certainly graphic, gritty and bleak. It is also unpleasant to watch. Where is the entertainment value in something this unremittingly dark and unpleasant?
