Taking a modern look at friendship and romance, Jess and Nick back in the dating pool after splitting up at the end of Series 3, but Jess complicates her pursuit when she becomes attracted to a colleague. Schmidt continues his single, womanising ways, though he still harbours feelings for CeCe.
It is honestly hard not to love this quirky gang. The comedic energy was there and I enjoyed it like I did with season 1. Everything fits right into place again and the chemistry is back.
"The Last Wedding" was pretty damn funny and not entirely awful as far as the relationship stuff was concerned. Search your feelings. You know it to be true.
The good news is if you've enjoyed the show in the past - and perhaps felt New Girl lost a bit of its fastball - the kickoff episodes suggest there might be more to like in the year ahead.
Overall, the episode was a nice season premiere and we should be optimistic about the upcoming antics. The shift that will include incorporating Coach and Winston more in the upcoming stories will certainly pay off.
Liz Meriwether said one of the goals for getting the show back on track would be to simplify the storytelling and put her characters in position to be funny as often as possible. "The Last Wedding" is a strong example of that approach at work.
