At the end of last season, following an assassination attempt on her life, President Keane (Marvel) broke her promise to Carrie (Danes) by arresting 200 members of the intelligence community without bringing charges against them, including Saul Berenson (Patinkin). As season seven begins, Carrie has left her job in the White House and moved back to D.C. and is living with her sister Maggie (Amy Hargreaves) to take on the Keane administration and secure the release of the 200.
Such is the case with Useful Idiot, a perfectly fine hour that's something of a letdown after the intensity of the last few episodes, even as it puts interesting pieces in place for the final stretch.
I was so tempted to give this an A-, and then that final shot happened. Am I bad for laughing out loud at seeing Carrie hallucinate - gasp! - herself? I mean, come on. We got the point.
Personally, I'd hesitate to go so far as to say "you've lost the plot," but I would definitely say tonight's episode missed a step, making the first wrong move in what has been Homeland's best season in five years.
