The trials and tribulations of Dr. Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes), a socially challenged doctor who moves from London to the picturesque village of Port Wenn in Cornwall.
As a very irregular viewer of ITV1's home-grown grumpy doctor drama, I'm not well equipped to comment on its current gait, but I would have said that last night's episode counted as a canter at the very least, rising to a gallop for short sections.
The scripts have a slight tang of nastiness about them -- too slight for my tastes, but just occasionally its mockery of the Cornish locals reminds me of the take-no-prisoners humour of Nighty Night.
Doc Martin is sweet, stirring, and completely addictive. Perhaps it's the gorgeous scenery, perhaps it's the magnificent acting, or could it be the ugly mugs that make it so irresistible?
