Season 4 opens with Jenna beginning her senior year determined to make a fresh start, but she experiences major humiliation at home and in school. Also, her lingering feelings for Matty challenge her resolve to avoid boy drama and focus on school.
Sadly, Awkward Season 4 Episode 1 made the series falter miserably. With new show runners taking the helm, and maybe even a new staff of writers, what was once amazing about the comedy is now a distant memory.
There is overwhelming evidence in this first episode that it is a lesser show being run by showrunners with a weaker hold over these characters, this universe, and the rhythms of television comedy more broadly.
Seldom have the 99% of high school students been better represented on TV than through Jenna, which may explain why Awkward remains smart and funny as it enters its fourth season.
