The film tells the story of an adult named Pete who experiences a sudden rush of teenage hormones over a three-week period after surgery on his pituitary gland. Mood swings, voice changes, acne and, of course, near uncontrollable erections, welcome, Pete!
To make the premise of a 30-year-old who acts like a 15-year-old work, Mr. Pollak has made everyone else in the film act like a 15-year-old, too. It doesn't quite click.
It manages to break ground as it normalizes conversations about sex and gives viewers an eye into all kinds of preferences and practices - with plenty of laughs along the way.
Though Pollak's direction in his first narrative feature is solid, The Late Bloomer is mostly an excuse for predictable sex jokes and ample toplessness.
