'Hairspray Live!' takes place in 1962 Baltimore, telling the story of Tracy Turnblad, a plus-sized teenage girl who dreams of appearing on 'The Corny Collins Show,' a segregated Baltimore TV dance show.
In the end, it was more on the good side in terms of the story and performances. But the bad network business surrounding the songs was almost too much to bear at times.
A lot of people tune into live musicals to hate watch (ahem, looking at you Sound of Music), but Hairspray Live! totally nailed it thanks to Hudson and Grande.
Well! That was something. NBC's Hairspray Live! didn't just raise the bar for live TV musicals -- it bedazzled it, twirled it around and threw it up in the air while doing cartwheels.
There may have been enough aerosol spray to burn off the rest of our ozone layer, but Wednesday's ambitious live version of the musical Hairspray on NBC was worth the environmental damage. It was light and fun and soon had you stuck.
