TOM (Josh Malina), in A Few Good Men, was the orderly for Col. Nathan R. Jessup USMC, commander, Marine barracks, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.On 6 September 1990, Col. Jessup held a meeting with the XO, Lt. Col. Matthew A. Markinson USMC, and the leader of Second Platoon Bravo, 1st Lt. Jonathan James Kendrick USMC). In the middle of it, Tom heard Jessup call his name. Tom went into the office and saluted. Get the President on the line, Jessup said. We're surrendering our position in Cuba. Tom turned, slightly downcast, and prepared to execute. Wait, Tom, the colonel said. Don't get the President just yet. Maybe we ought to consider this a little more. Dismissed, Tom. Yes, sir! said Tom, with relief. And he went out.He would never fully realize that some things said at that meeting would set in motion a chain of events that would result in Col. Markinson winding up dead of a self-inflicted bullet wound, and both Jessup and Kendrick sent to Fort Leavenworth.
