Mars has 5 races: Red, Green, Yellow, White and Black. Tal Hajus was the Jeddak (King) of the Tharks (Green race) when John Carter arrived on Mars. He was about 15 feet tall, green skinned with walrus-like tusks growing upward from his lower jaw, he has 4 arms and 2 legs. He was once a great and muscular warrior. He had become old, fat, cruel and debauched. Source: A Princess of Mars (the book) by E. R. Burroughs. At the end of the book A Princess of Mars Tal Hajus finally meets more than his match when John Carter sets up a duel between he and the great warrior and statesman Tars Tarkas to be held before all of the warriors of Thark after Tal Hajus was a no-show during the fierce and bloody battle with the Warhoons, a rival horde of green men of Barsoom. The roles are reversed initially in the movie with Tal Hajus being the one vying to be Jeddack. His broken tusk is duly covered as well. He is a little more fierce and capable than portrayed in the book and his climax in the movie is seen at the end of the great white ape battle scene.
