In the book A Princess of Mars Sola is a female Thark assigned to teach John Carter the language of Barsoom after he is captured by the Tharks so he can communicate better with Tars Tarkas and the other Tharks. In contrast to other women such as Sarkoja, Sola exhibits acts of kindness and tenderness. In The Princess of Mars, she tells John Carter an interesting story of her geneology which is unheard of among the Tharks since normally the eggs of the young are mixed and normal family relationships such as are found amoung the red men and other races of Mars are not found among the green hordes of Barsoom. Sola tries to protect Dejah Thoris as well as John Carter from the cruelties normally foisted upon men and women of the red race by the Tharks and other green hordes of the dried out ocean bottoms of Barsoom.In the movie her kind tendencies work against her and Sarkoja is Sola's nemesis as expressed in the book. The movie preserves and covers the relationship between Sola and Tars Tarkas and Sola plays a major role as a heroine and helper to John Carter. Show less «
