prior to joining NCIS, Macy served in the United States Marine Corps, specifically with the military police. As a lieutenant, one of the cases that she investigated was the murder of a Mexican national and drug runner, Pedro Hernandez. The primary suspect in the case was Gunnery Sergeant Leroy Jethro Gibbs, whose wife and daughter had been killed by Hernandez. Macy collected the evidence, much of which pointed to Gibbs as the killer, but then buried it, because she considered the killing justified. Macy spent the next twenty years protecting Gibbs, something he did not learn until 2009. Macy rose to the rank of Major before she left the military. She then joined NCIS, eventually becoming the Special Agent in Charge of the Office of Special Projects, in the Los Angeles field office. During her tenure there, Macy coordinated a joint operation with elements of the MCRT team to neutralize a terrorist cell within the United States. This operation brought her back into contact with Gibbs, who was now an NCIS agent as well and head of the MCRT team in the Washington D.C. field office. There was a great deal of tension between the two, as Gibbs believed that she had botched the case against him twenty years ago and he was almost dismissive of her abilities as an agent and leader.[2] It was during this case that Macy confided in Nate Getz about what had happened back in 1991 with Gibbs and Hernandez. Getz later indirectly informed Gibbs about what Macy had done for him, which affected a more stable and amicable relationship between them.Shortly after the operation ended, one of Macy's senior field agents, G. Callen, was the target of an assassination attempt that left him in critical condition.
