(Dr.) James Palmer was called to assist Dr. Donald Ducky Mallard in autopsies and to solve cases, and to fill in for Gerald while he was in rehab after getting shot in the shoulder by Ari Haswari. But, unlike Gerald, Palmer (as he's so often called along with 'Mr. Palmer', or later in the run, 'Dr. Palmer', by Ducky) actually looks forward to Ducky's far-off stories about the World War, Civil War and so on. Jimmy is one person who lives to tell the tale of an aged man who told the most wonderful and mystical stories around, especially about history, but Gibbs doesn't have time to sit there and listen about a story which the current case reminded him of or what he was saying to the bodies. Palmer always asks questions and for that everyone (mainly DiNozzo) calls him a nerd. He has also been the recipient of several Gibbs head slaps.Palmer is nearly always blamed by Ducky for getting them lost on the way to the crime scene. In the episode In the Darkness it is revealed that Jimmy is a Type I diabetic. In the Season 14 episode Keep Going , Palmer reveals he is now a Doctor, having passed the medical examiner's test.
