Smaug is one of the last remaining dragons of Middle-Earth. While his fiery breath and enormous size are formidable weapons, his greatest weapon is his cunning. He has an exceptional sense of smell. He guards his treasure in the Lonely Mountain, and uses it as a bed. Long before the events of The Hobbit, when Thorin Oakenshield was still young, Smaug attacked the dwarf inhabitants of the Lonely Mountain and took it for his own, sending the dwarves into exile. When Gandalf learns that Sauron (dubbed 'the necromancer' in the book The Hobbit ), has returned he realizes that Smaug must be destroyed, or else he be used by Sauron in a future War for Middle-Earth. After meeting Thorin, he devises a plan to take back the Lonely Mountain. Thorin agrees, eager to recover the home and treasure of his ancestors.During the assault on The Lonely Mountain, Smaug was killed by Bard, a bowman from the nearby Laketown. Following his death, news quickly spread that the treasures of the Lonely Mountain were 'available', leading to the Battle of Five Armies.
