Shaggy is the long-haired, skinny member of a teenage gang that solves mysteries with a cowardly Great Dane in the TV cartoon series Scooby Doo, Where Are You!! (1969) and its long series of follow-ups. These include other TV series, made-for-TV and -video movies and two big-budget live-action theatrical films in which Shaggy is played by a flesh-and-blood actor (Matthew Lillard) alongside a computer-animated Scooby-Doo.Shaggy can be identified by his goatee, green T-shirt and bell-bottom pants. Like Scooby, he's terrified of the supernatural, despite invariably discovering that the ghosts he and his gang pursue are just everyday criminals trying to scare people away from their wicked activities. Also like Scooby, he has a ravenous appetite. He even steals Scooby Snacks, which are probably just dog food.Like Scooby, but unlike the other members of his gang, Shaggy has a distinct personality, which is why he and the dog often split from the other characters in search for clues. More screen time. More opportunities for gags. But Shaggy's life outside crime solving is largely unknown--or at least it was until later productions, including the live-action movies, began filling in the details. The first children to watch Scooby-Doo clung to the few facts that sometimes floated out to them, such as Daphne's offhand remark that Shaggy was the swingingest gymnast in school. It was easy to forget these kids even went to school. The later productions have spoiled the fun.Casey Kasem has voiced Shaggy from the beginning, but the vegetarian actor has sometimes refused to play the part whenever the food Shaggy shoves into his mouth includes meat. Billy West and Scott Innes are among the others who have voiced the part.
