Osama bin Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden (born March 10, 1957 - May 1, 2011) was the founder and former leader of al-Qaeda. He was a member of the wealthy Saudi bin Laden family, and an ethnic Yemeni Kindite.bin Laden was on the FBI lists of Ten Most Wanted Fugitives and Most Wanted Terrorists for his involvement in the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings. From 2001 to 2011, he was a major target of the War on Terror, with a US$25 million bounty by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.On May 1, 2011, Osama was shot and killed inside his private residential compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan by U.S. Navy SEALs and CIA operatives in a covert operation ordered by President Obama. bin Laden's current whereabouts or whether or not he's alive or dead isn't yet fully known, but it has been a popular topic for conspiracy theories. Shortly after his death, on June 16, it was announced that Ayman al-Zawahiri had replaced Osama as leader.
