Carla is a nurse who works at Sacred Heart Hospital, in which the main action of the show takes place. She has worked at Sacred Heart for several years before the start of the series. She was raised in Chicago and her family is from the Dominican Republic. After her father left the family when she was young, she became very close with her mother and her brother. She also has two sisters. Her mother lives with her, and she is crushed when her mother passed away.Carla starts dating Christopher Turk during the second episode of the first season. Their relationship continues to build, and Carla marries Turk in the season finale of season 3. However, Carla frequently says that she wishes Turk was as close to her as he is to J.D. She and Turk go through a trial separation in season 4 after Carla discovers that Turk is still talking to his ex-girlfriend without telling her he is married. She moves in with Elliot for a while. Following some couples therapy and some frank discussions with Turk and J.D., the couple reunite and immediately begin trying to conceive. They are initially unsuccessful, but finally get pregnant toward the end of the fifth season after several episodes are spent on Turk and Carla worrying about their respective fertility. Carla gives birth to a baby girl, whom they name Isabella. JD becomes the child's godfather. She is sometimes very over reactive and constantly feels the need to tell other supporting cast members how to go about their lives (most notably the series main character J.D.) and this advice is often unwanted, if not simply intrusive. She is also obsessed with spreading gossip. Despite her personal foibles, no one dares make fun of her; when anyone does, she humiliates them in front of the entire hospital. She is feared even by the janitor. She enjoys a unique closeness with Dr. Cox, with whom she went on a date before the start of the series. Carla is one of the few people who Cox openly respects, and he is open to her advice. During the first season, Cox continues to have an unrequited crush on Carla, and sabotages a relationship for her. Cox gets over the crush and reunites with his ex-wife Jordan, but he continues to be close with Carla. She slowly became best friends with Elliot after initially being wary of her. She has had a somewhat uneven relationship with Dr. Kelso, generally loathing him but at one point becoming friends.
