Nigel Bailey is a shy and very young, although he is also a most capable and well educated English historian whose life is turned upside down when Trinity College, near Boston in the USA, engages him as assistant to Sydney Fox, a history professor and relic hunter. She relies on him for research and usually drags him along on her adventurous treasure hunts, all over the world, usually against his will as he has a gentle and cautious nature. The hunts often turn out to be very dangerous, but Sydney benefits greatly from such a reliable and brilliant right-hand, although she has to protect him as he is hates violence. As the series progressed he did become more confident and was more able to defend himself, but still needed Sydney's help some of the time. Twice they even bump into his older, more confident and worldly brother, Preston, who was a bit of a bully when they were boys and still calls Nigel by the nickname 'Podge'. He became a museum executive in London, having 'stolen' the job from Nigel.Nigel is very sweet and rather innocent in seasons one and two of Relic Hunter, especially when it comes to women, however, he does 'fancy' Sydney although this never came to anything, Sydney preferred to be with physically stronger and larger men.Nigel hated the boarding school he went to as a child and admitted he was often beaten. His parents were both dead by the time he started working for Sydney. He is allergic to horses, has middle ear syndrome and is accident prone yet none of this prevents him from being the best assistant Sydney has ever had.
