Portland homicide detective Nick Burkhardt comes from a long line of investigators, though the nature of his family's history in is initially a mystery to him -- as is the violence inherent in the second full-time job he has unwittingly inherited.Nick is a Grimm, someone who hunts supernatural forces roaming the Earth (especially, it seems, Portland and surrounding areas). The best known of Nick's distant relatives are the Brothers Grimm, whose works were intended to warn humanity.Nick's family has been at this decidedly grim task for centuries, but Nick doesn't learn of it until informed by his Aunt Marie, who raised him after the apparent accidental death of his parents. Aunt Marie leaves behind a variety of weapons and valuable reading material to provide Nick with valuable on-the-job-training in how to locate and dispatch various Wesens. Like those Grimms before him, Nick is quick-witted and possesses uncanny abilities -- nearly supernatural in their own right -- to get a good read on people (and non-people). He also develops the ability to see the real faces of the Wesens hiding among the populace. In his day job as a police officer, he works closely with partner and friend Hank Griffin. In his second job as supernatural enforcer, he works closely with gentle Wesen Monroe.Nick is head over heels in love with Juliette, with whom he is terrified to share his terrifying secret.
