DOUGLAS J. NEEDLES (Flea), in the Back to the Future franchise, is the man responsible, in one of the many timelines for Hill Valley, California, for Marty McFly ruining himself. He knows just what button to push: to call McFly chicken . (Thus his name, an obvious pun on the word needle , which means to prod or pressure someone into doing something.) Nobody calls me 'chicken'! Marty always snarls. The results are predictable.In one timeline, Needles challenges Marty to a drag race on the street. Marty, goaded by that chicken : name, agrees. Result: a Rolls Royce pulls out of a side street as they pass. Marty hits the Rolls Royce, breaks his hand, and becomes liable in a major lawsuit.Thirty years later, Needles is a fellow suit in the Japanese-controlled firm where he and McFly both work. Needles goes McFly into a transaction that breaks every work rule, not to mention the law. When Marty raises the criminal issue, Needles plays the chicken card. Marty swipes his card. And immediately Ito Fujitsu comes on the line to announce he caught the transaction. Result: Marty McFly gets fired, and Needles advances.But in a timeline in which Marty McFly has faced down an enemy who threatened his life, Marty does not rise to Needles' bait. Result: Needles speeds off, and does not realize that Marty has not followed, until the Rolls Royce roars out of the side street, misses hitting Needles by inches--and is not so much as dented, or even scratched, let alone stove in on the driver's side. Because Marty never moved.Needles goes on to become a no-account office drone. And maybe Fujitsu finally catches him out in originating his illegal scheme and fires him, not Marty.Marty, meanwhile, becomes a Grammy Award-winning American Top Forty artist. Go figure! Show less «
