Mr. Wint was one of two assassins employed by Ernst Stavro Blofeld during his plan to extort money from world governments by threatening them with an enormously powerful orbiting laser. Blofeld's laser required a large supply of diamonds, which he procured through a complex smuggling pipeline that originated at a South African diamond mine. When Blofeld had secured a sufficient quantity of the stones, he sent Mr. Wint and his partner Mr. Kidd to close down the pipeline by killing each person who was a link in it. The pair used various techniques: a deadly scorpion, a bomb, drowning, and an attempt to immolate a courier in a funeral home's crematory.Mr. Wint frequently wore an obnoxious cologne, and when a bottle of this broke, saturating James Bond's clothing, Bond learned the smell. Even though he had never seen Wint, this scent gave the assassin away at a critical moment, allowing Bond to overpower him, hook a bomb to his belt, and pitch him over the rail of a cruise ship. Wint presumably died instantly when the bomb exploded just as he entered the water.
