Melanie Moretti (Valerie Bertinelli)Hopeless romantic Melanie Moretti (Valerie Bertinelli) was flying to Paris with her two best friend when their plane made an emergency landing in Cleveland. The ladies soon realize that what may be considered old and chubby in Los Angeles is, in fact, hot in Cleveland. Melanie now lives in Cleveland with her two best friends - former soap star Victoria Chase and eyebrow stylist to the stars Joy Scroggs. The three ladies live in a home taken care of by elderly spitfire Elka Ostrovsky.The fortysomething Melanie is the author of the books 200 Things Every Woman Should Do Before She Dies (hence the trip to Paris) and writes a monthly column in Womens Day Magazine. She now has two college aged children Jenna and Will. Melanie is eternally optimistic and fiercely loyal to her friends. She tends to be more amused than annoyed by Elka's frankness, Victoria's selfishness and Joy's cynicism. Melanie met her former husband Anders in college, and dropped out of school when she became pregnant so she never dated a lot nor did she have the chance to be young and carefree. Now divorced, Melanie is learning to navigate dating in the new millennium and can sometimes be a little too trusting and gullible.
