After actor John Marzelli (who played the role of Vince) no longer wanted to be a regular on the series, his character was fired from the chemical plant and he became only a guest character. Kevin Quigley was hired to play the role of Lars.Lawrence Lars Frederickson is an immigrant from Vienna who moved to Paradise Valley in the hopes of getting a better job. Originally, he is a skilled and benevolent albeit slightly creepy scientist, but when Danielle Atron introduces him to the GC-161 project, he takes on a role as a secondary antagonist. After he joins the series, the series becomes noticeably darker and more disturbing. Whereas TSWOAM was, in its first and second season just a comedy sci-fi teen series, and the plant employees portrayed as bumbling and incompetent, after Lars becomes available to do Danielle's dirty work for her, the corrupt happenings and history of the chemical plant no longer just include illegal chemical research, but also numerous murders of plant employees who knew too much, which Danielle covered up and even carried out herself. Although Lars has never killed anyone and doesn't seem to enjoy bad things happening to people, he goes so far as to drug an FDA member spy on George Mack's private telephone recordings and deliberately try to get Annie Mack in trouble to the point where she has to go in front of an ethics board.Lars begins to regret these things as Danielle's behavior becomes more scheming and violent. When she lets him in on her plans to falsify test results about the potential dangerous side-effects of GC-161, he is initially disgusted with her and worried that the chemical could hurt someone. After drugging an FDA member under Danielle's orders, Lars gives in and joins Danielle, hoping that he'll be able to flee with his wife to a safe location after he makes a lot of money from the chemical being marketed and sold. Unfortunately for him, Danielle doesn't really regard him as a friend and it's implied that she'll betray him in the end, which she does.In the final episode of the series, Danielle promises Lars a lot of cash for his participation. She wants to bomb her own chemical plant with explosive devices to destroy any evidence of negative side-effects of GC-161, after which her plan is to escape to Europe and live off of a Swiss bank account that she had set up years ago. Lars is concerned about what will happen to the Mack family, all of whom are trapped in the plant (aside from Annie who is at school), if they are left behind when the bomb goes off, to which Danielle nonchalantly tells him, they're evidence . She then orders him to set up multiple explosive devices. When Lars and Danielle discover that Alex's best friend, Raymond, is in the plant, Danielle betrays Lars by fleeing the scene. Annoyed at Ray, Lars handcuffs him to Danielle's desk, leaving him to be killed in the impending explosion, Lars' darkest moment in the series, before he himself leaves the plant and hurries to try and drive away before the cops get wind of things. Ray escapes with Alex and Lars is arrested by the police after being set up by Danielle.Lars speaks fluent English despite being from Vienna and appears as a tall, beady-eyed, lab coat clad chemist with a creepy, leering personality and a rat-like face. He has no mentioned family aside from a wife, whom he loves very much. His wife is quiet and speaks very little English, and only appears in one episode of the series. She moves to America after Lars does. Lars is friendless and is shown to not want any friends anyway, disliking most people and only being kind in most cases to fake being friends with colleagues in order to learn private info from them. Aside from his wife, the closest person to Lars is Danielle. They get along extremely well and make a great team, however Lars is not her friend and he begins to find her actions inappropriate and cruel towards the end of the series, especially when it comes to the attempted murder of the Mack family. Despite not really being evil per-say, Lars is very corrupt and will, despite not liking it, commit criminal acts if ordered to by Danielle, which he either does out of greed (money from GC-161) or fear of being killed by Danielle himself.
