John Patrick Mason was a British operative and Captain of the British S.A.S on a mission to obtain the microphone files of FBI-director John Edgar Hoover. He obtained them but was caught at the Canadian border. Mason was held without trial for 33 years until he gave up the microfilms which he never did. Mason was imprisoned in the Alcatraz Prison (The Rock) in 1962. In 1963 Mason successfully broke out of Alcatraz and tried again to escape the Americans but was captured again. The F.B.I. then locked him away for 33 years during which he broke out twice from Maximum Security Prisons.When the situation arose on Alcatraz the F.B.I. were forced to release Mason so that he may help in gaining control over Alcatraz by providing the F.B.I. with the exact route that he escaped from Alcatraz.Having never met F.B.I. Chemical Specialist Stanly Goodspeed before he met him in the Interview Room at the F.B.I. Headquarters San Francisco Office where Special Agent Ernest Paxton was unable to convince Mason to help out. So Walmack then sent Goodspeed to get him to help which he was able to do with the side offer of a Suite at the Beaumont Hotel and a haircut.At the Beaumont Hotel Mason gets the Penthouse Suite and whilst taking a shower pulls a rope out of the wall and conceals it. Then noticing that there was a phone next to the shower Mason orders a large meal for the F.B.I. Agents guarding him. Whilst he is getting a haircut he winds the cord up and loops it around his hand. Once the haircut is competed Walmack makes a deal that Mason would get his life back if he were to help out. Mason makes him shake on it but puts the loop over Walmacks wrist and then throws him over the balcony and runs off.Stealing a Hummer from the valet service and racing off with Goodspeed chasing him in a Ferrari. Racing through the streets of San Francisco with the police Mason knocks a Tram off its rails and blocks the way of the police and crushes Goodspeeds Ferrari. He then drives off to meet his daughter.He meets his daughter in the park and talks to her. In the conversation he explains how he met her mother and then the police turn up. Goodspeed had been on the other side of the bench during the conversation after stealing a teenagers bike and finding Masons daughter and following her. He immediately walks up and says that Mason is working with the F.B.I. and that he hasnt escaped from prison again.Then they are taken to the F.B.I. Mobile command center where after explaining that he would not be able to show F.B.I. Director Walmack the route he took on the blueprints saying that his blueprints were in his head it then became clear that the only way that they would be able to get into Alcatraz would be if he went with the U.S. Naval Seals assigned to this mission.Mason then suits up along with the Navy Seals and Goodspeed and then gets on the helicopter to go to Alcatraz. Where the submersible are launched from the helicopter and leads the Naval Seals to the submerged grate he had escaped from. Inside the Naval Seals see no way out of the room but Mason shows them the way he took to get out under the boilers. Remembering the timing Mason rolls through the fire and gears to the other side where the Navy Seals thought he had abandoned them but opens the door and says Welcome to the Rock Leading them through the tunnels he leads the Navy Seals to the shower room. The Navy Seals see this as their only possibility to gain access to the prison. The Navy Seals make the mistake of moving a custom made motion sensor placed on top of the man hole by Marine Captain Hendricks. This then leads to the Marines being warned of an intrusion and then the massacre of the Navy Seals.Deciding to leave the prison now that no one was left to stop him Mason grabs one of the Navy Seals weapons and headsets and starts heading back. Once being almost incinerated by a bomb dropped into the tunnel by the Marines he agrees to help Goodspeed and takes him to the morgue. Then after killing the Marines inside the Morgue and finding out what a VX Poison Gas Missile does to the human body he helps Goodspeed to remove the guidance chips from the missiles. As the Marines realize that the morgue team hasnt checked in for their Radio Transmissions they run in just as Goodspeed removes the final guidance chip and dives down a chute onto a trolley with Mason already in it. The trolley chocks break and the trolley rolls off picking up speed until the rails run out. The Marines following Mason then sets alight Marine Captain Hendricks with some Kerosene and a match. Then gets chocked by one of the other Marines which Goodspeed empties his full pistols magazine into.Then Mason decides to help buy Goodspeed some time by going to meet Brigadier General Francis X. Hummel the Marine Commander. Stating to Hummel that he is the final of the enemy. But after a confrontation with Hummel and saying that he destroyed the guidance chips Mason and Goodspeed end up locked in cells which Mason breaks out of and then they head to the beaches. Leaving Goodspeed to do the rest of the mission which doesnt last long before he ends up with a Marine behind him pointing a M16 at him. Mason turns up and breaks the Marines neck and states that the last time he swam the channel he was Goodspeeds age.They go up to the Marines Command Center where they witness the mutiny of Hummel which turns into a gun fight where Hummel is killed but tells Goodspeed where the final rocket is. Mason then tells Goodspeed to go to the lower lighthouse where the final rocket is located. Then ends up with two grenades being thrown at him which he escapes the blast of them by jumping in a bathtub. Then ends up in a fist fight with another Marine breaking the Marines knuckles by moving his head and letting the Marine punch a metal pole. Then runs to the beach where Goodspeed has been blown into the water by a Thermite Plasma missile from a USAF F18.Mason then reveals to Goodspeed where the Microfilm is located and then leaves to the scuba gear where the Navy Seals entered the prison.
