Jensen Ames, a former NASCAR racer who was wrongly convicted for the murder of his wife, gets sent to Terminal Island, home of the infamous Death Race (and formerly Death Match). While there, Ames meets Coach, chief of Frankenstein's pit crew. Hennesy (the prison warden) approaches Ames with a proposition, take the place of Frankenstein who died on the operating table after his last crash, using Ames' daughter Piper as her own bargaining chip. Ames takes up on this offer and becomes the new frank (information only known by the pit crew, Hennesy and a few guards. To all of the other inmates, he is Jensen Ames, a grease monkey for Frankenstein. As Frankenstein, Ames only needs one race victory to earn his freedom and leave Terminal Island, as the rules of Death Race state, any inmate, no matter what their conviction will be released from the prison upon winning 5 races. The reappearance of Frankenstein (Ames) reignites the rivalry between Frank and Machine Gun Joe (Played by Tyreese Gibson), the latter being the cause of the original Frankenstein's death as a result of Joe blowing Frankenstein's car up at the end of his last race by using an RPG7 and hitting the exposed gas tank at the back of The Monster (Frankenstein's Ford Mustang).
