Liang Candle was a member of the original Midnight Society and the only one living at the time of The Tale of the Silver Sight just after Gary and Tucker's Grandpa Gene has died. In a wheelchair, stern, and insistent about being referred to as General Liang Candle, he is approached by Gary and Tucker but severely warns them not to pursue the Silver Sight, which he describes as extremely evil. When they start to mention Gene's message, he guesses they have his piece of a record which will lead to it, and reluctantly says he'll be able to give his own part of it later that day. Quinn learns that when the Silver Sight's curse began effecting Donna Tilton's boyfriend Vince with a series of injuries, Candle stole her from Vince before she died in a car accident Candle survived. When Tucker returns to Candle's house after someone has broken into Grandma Aggie's, Quinn is there taking Vince's sketch of Donna Candle stole. Candle is gone but his collection of armor comes to life and attacks Tucker after he's found his record piece, almost killing him. When Megan returns to the Gregorys' sewer home for Jim to give her Eleanor's piece, she finds it empty and ransacked Candle searching it. She accuses him of being the Midnight Scoiety's betrayer they heard about who used the Silver Sight unleashing its evil. He presses her to give up the hunt and demands how many parts of the record they've gotten. When she refuses to tell him, he threatens her and reveals he doesn't need the wheelchair, chasing her in the sewer before she's called by the waif kid for help and is almost hit by a train before it disappears. She then finds Eleanor's record piece with a note from Jim for help, which makes Candle more of a suspect. After the New Midnight Society find the Silver Sight hidden in a carousel horse and the waif kid encourage them to use it against whomever they wish to beat, he seems frightened to Candle's arrival. Candle claims the kid is a demon who uses the Silver Sight to trick its users to losing their souls to it after the good luck it gives inevitably reverses. He admits that he did use it, but the rest of the Midnight Society did as well and were eventually killed by it after their success. He doesn't say what he or Gene got from the charm, but says his fatal heart attack must have been caused by the demon since Gene realized something about how to destroy it. The kid reveals Candle was the prowler who broke into Grandma Aggie's home, and even Gary is reluctant to believe Candle isn't the villain after that and his encounter with Megan. Pressed by the kid to use the Silver Sight to destroy Candle, Gary considers which is telling the truth. He looks at Candle threateningly for a moment before revealing whom he's chosen: the kid, who really is a demon and is destroyed by his own charm. Candle commends them and remarks Gene would have been proud before he leads the New Midnight Society and the original Midnight Society's loved ones out.In the end, a teenaged Laing is one of the original Midnight Society members revealed to be listening to the story told by Gene.
