Frank Sullivan is the father of John Sullivan and husband of Julia Sullivan in the movie Frequency. In 1969, he perished in a warehouse fire-both John and Julia never recover fully from this loss. In 1999, 30 years later, John is playing with his father's HAM radio and discovers that due to a solar event over The Bronx, he is able to communicate with his father back in 1969-managing to convince his father not to follow his instincts and as a result, Frank survives (although it is stated later he did eventually die of lung cancer from smoking too much). However, since the timeline has been altered, Frank ends up losing Julia to the Nightengale Killer (a serial killer who targets nurses). Turns out since Julia left the hospital the night Frank was killed, her patient died-the patient was the killer. Since Frank lived, so did the killer, and now armed with the knowledge of the files John has (he became a homicide detective) Frank is racing to prevent further murders from happening, hoping to snag the killer before Julia is killed. Meanwhile, Frank also quits smoking, knowing it can kill him. The father-son bond grows strong as they work together and Frank is as proud of his son now as he was then (which for him is now, but you know). Eventually Frank, Julia and John back in 1969 get targeted by the killer (they survive due to Julia protecting her boys , distracting the killer long enough for Frank to shoot off his hand-but the guy gets away). Back in 1999, having finally confronted the killer at the same time, John is almost subdued by the killer strangling him, however the hand on his throat withers away (remember 1969 Frank shot it off, changing the future), and before the killer can finish off John, 1999 Frank takes him out (he quit smoking, so therefore didn't die of cancer).Frank as a fireman is a loose cannon, with generally good instincts. Julia worries he takes things too far, both at work, and pushing 1969 John. He is a good man, willing to help prevent further murders, not just to prevent Julia from being killed, but because he is a good guy. He is a loving husband and father,a strong member of the community and his hobby (which eventually saves his life and prevents his son from ending up alone and bitter as an adult) is his HAM radio. He is a great everyman character, and makes the movie very enjoyable.
