Elise Dunstan is a friend of Guy and Rosemary Woodhouse, as is her husband, Hugh Dunstan, a man with a limp. She recommended Rosemary to Dr. C.C. Hill, (whom Elise describes as a dreamboy ), the obstetrician for Elise's two youngest boys. For reasons Elise never understood, Rosemary quit doctor Hill after just one appointment to see Dr. Abraham Sapirstein, a famous obstetrician who had appeared on Open End. Rosemary ceased most of her social life for a while after that, and Elise didn't see her until her big announcing the pregnancy party in February. At the party, Elise got her first look at Rosemary's beautiful new apartment in New York's well-appointed Bramford apartment building, and expressed her jealousy. She also distinctly had the feeling that Guy was trying to prevent her having a chance to talk with Rosemary.Later that night, in the kitchen, Elise learned that Ro was suffering great pain throughout her pregnancy, and that Dr. Sapirstein was not doing anything about it. Elise, backed by all of Rosemary's other friends, strongly advised Rosemary to see Dr. Hill for a second opinion. Rosemary resisted the idea at first, but seemed to give in after having a good cry.Elise heard nothing more from Rosemary until the night she gave birth to her little boy, Andrew ( Andy ) Woodhouse. On arriving home from a dinner date, the babysitter told Elise that Rosemary had called, sounding very upset or even crazy, and had wanted to speak with her urgently. When she called back, Guy said that Rosemary was out and would call back, but he sounded very tense, and Elise was certain that she heard Rosemary crying, or even screaming, in the background.Elise never found out what went on that night.
