Detective Lee Scanlon, portrayed by Canadian actor David Cubitt, first appeared in the third U.S.-shown episode of Medium, A Couple of Choices, January 17, 2005. According to creator Glen Gordon Caron in a Season 1 DVD interview, the character was not originally conceived of for the program. It was created because TPTB felt a character in addition to the already cast D.A. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) was needed to flesh out the crime portion of the program. His character continues the tradition of hard-boiled detectives like Dana Andrews' Detective Lieutenant Mark McPherson in the 1944 film-noir Laura.Medium Patricia Arquette's Allison DuBois was introduced to Lee by Devalos in A Couple of Choices to help him solve a case close to his heart, the murders of his sister, Lorraine; her husband; and their unborn child. During this episode, Lee was presented as being a sarcastic non-believer of Allison's abilities who came to, despite his reservations, respect her gift. He has on many later occasions helped Allison and her family. The Season 1, May 2, 2005, episode, In the Rough, unearths a bit more background information about the character when Lee's early years as a police officer figure into a reopened case that Allison is working on. (We also find out that his full first name is Leland.)The Season 2, April 24, 2006, episode, Knowing Her, later reveals that while undercover, Lee fell in love with and, unaware of her family ties, became engaged to Elena Cabrera, a member of a murderous drug family. Elena dies in the episode. It is also revealed that Lee became a drug addict at the time he knew Elena and is now a member of Narcotics Anonymous. This storyline is continued in a later episode, Season 3's February 21, 2007, Second Opinion, when Lee investigates the murder of his N.A. friend, David. The November 15, 2006, Season 3 premiere, Four Dreams, continued Lee's relationship with Deputy Mayor Lynn DiNovi, a.k.a. Deputy Doll (Creator Caron's real-life wife Tina DiJoseph).
