Connor MacLeod was born in 1518 in the Highland village of Glenfinnan, Scotland off the shores of Loch Shiel. He is an Immortal. Part of a race of ageless supernatural humans whose origins remain a mystery, Connor's first 'death' came at the hands of a clan enemy, and fellow immortal, by the name of Kurgan when MacLeod was still a young man. Thought mortally wounded by the rest of his clan once the battle was over, Connor miraculously returned to life shortly after dying. Believed to be evil by the superstitious Highlanders of his clan, Connor was banished by the MacLeod clan to wander the Highlands in uncertainty. That was, of course, until he encountered the ancient and powerful Immortal Juan-Sanchez Villa Lobos Ramirez. It was Ramirez who taught the Highlander everything he would need to know about his immortality. Ramirez would teach MacLeod that the only way for an immortal to die was to have his head removed from his shoulders. When this happened in combat with another immortal, the winner would receive his opponents energy, experience and power in a spectacular transfer of electrical energy known as the Quickening. This was the nature of the Game, as the Immortals called it. A constant battle for supremecy between immortals that, at the time of MacLeod's first death, had already been going on for thousands of years. Still, with immortals encountering one another from time to time, they were all still awaiting the time of the Gathering.Originally believed to be a gathering of immortals to a specific place, it has now been speculated that the Gathering is less a matter of geography and more a matter of the Quickening, itself. Rather than immortals gathering to one place to do battle, it is the Quickening that is gathering until only two immortals remain to fight for the Prize: The right to rule mankind for all eternity. In the end, There Can Be Only One.
