Charlie Kelly is the janitor at Paddy's Pub in south Philadelphia, where he works with his childhood friend Mac, and Dennis and Dee Reynolds. Charlie is generally the most simple minded of the gang (Charlie, Mac, Dennis, Sweet Dee and Frank Reynolds), and his friends regularly exploit him by putting him up to ridiculous challenges such as entering an underground fighting tournament. Charlie may also be the illegitimate son of Frank Reynolds, who is his roommate and a kindred spirit in weirdness. His mother may have been a prostitute.Charlie often does the grunt work, or Charlie work, at the bar that no one else is willing to do, including cleaning toilets, cleaning up after deceased customers and other unenviable tasks. Charlie is also dyslexic. Charlie has done a variety of drugs, but seems to prefer inhalants such as glue and spray paint. He also drinks heavily. It's very likely that Charlie was sexually abused as a child by his Uncle Jack.Charlie is madly in love The Waitress and has come up with a variety of ploys to hook up with her, including once pretending to have cancer so she would sleep with him out pity. It's a futile quest made funnier for fans who know The Waitress is played by Mary Elizabeth Ellis, actor Charlie Day's real-life wife. There is no medium gear for Charlie, who seizes upon a challenge, mission or activity and goes full speed ahead. Whether he is attempting to ban smoking from bars, trying to cash in on a water stain in the shape of Jesus or trying to rid the city of bums, Charlie goes all in every time. Charlie takes on various personalities, often inspired by movie characters or other figures in pop culture, including Al Pacino's Serpico, Vietnam War veteran Ron Kovic (played by Tom Cruise in Born on the Fourth of July ) and Matt Damon's genius janitor Will Hunting. Charlie has also invented the character of Greenman, who wears a head-to-toe green lycra outfit that covers his face. Greenman is the mascot Charlie says nobody wanted but got him through some hard times. Charlie first came up with Greenman in high school and revisits him after taking acid. Show less «
