Carla is Guido's mistress. She arrives early in the film on a train that approaches the camera. Guido slyly couldn't find her a room at his hotel, and instead puts her in a room in a different hotel. She is a married woman, married to Luigi - but she asks if Guido's been good anyway. Luigi is a depressed sort, stuck in a dead end job. Carla fantasizes about Guido getting a job, and has had dreams where Luigi has killed them both - (Guido and Carla). Guido sets up a fantasy in her room of her putting on slut makeup and arriving the room as if she is meeting a stranger. She clearly is a strong part of Guido's sexual fantasies. During the scene when Guido (as director) is being harassed by so many people on the crew, one person indicates that Carla has complained about being put up in the Railroad Hotel . Somewhat later in the film, she calls him up and indicates she is sick, (she has a 104 degree temperature).. and demand he comes over immediately. He goes to her hotel. This is after a scene where Guido sincerely requests that his wife, Luisa, comes to visit him where he is working. He suggests she let her husband know and she thinks that is unnecessary, but wonders why he (Guido) stays with her. After Guido and his wife have a few arguments, Carla arrives to a small outside cafe where Guido and Luisa are having a meal. She does not sit with them. Luisa makes it clear she is aware of the affair. Luisa gives him a hard time about being dishonest. Luisa is mad he has mixed her up in her life and she knows all about them. Luisa goes and meets Carla, who is singing and they walk in a dancing rhythm together. Carla next appears in a fantasy harem sequence involving many of the women in Guido's life. Carla then appears in the final roundup of Guido's life at the site of the space launch which is being torn down. A small and of musicians leads a parade of all the characters in Guido's life around the set. Carla asks whether you can't do without us . He indicates to join the line of his life characters. Guido takes his wife's hand as everyone dances around and he and Lusia joins the line as the band plays on. Show less «
