Signore Bonasera, in a brief part, establishes a major theme of the film. He is introduced early, when he approaches Don Vito Corleone during his daughter's wedding (Connie Corleone marries Carlo Rizzi) to ask a favor. It is traditional, on a daughter's wedding day, for the Don to receive requests and not turn them down. Bonasera explains that his daughter was badly beaten and permanently injured by some young men who tried to force themselves on her. He asks for justice, which he did not get through the courts. The Godfather upbraids him for having relied on the police and the courts, rather than showing respect by coming to him in the first place. If you had come to me in friendship then this scum that ruined your daughter would be suffering this very day. The Godfather pledges that he will avenge the wrong done to Bonasera's daughter. Bonasera leaves with the understanding that someday he may be called upon to re-pay this favor.Indeed, he is called upon. Bonasera is an undertaker, and it is to him that Sonny Corleone is taken after being bullet-ridden in an ambush on the causeway. He must use all his skill to make Sonny's body presentable for his mother to see.
