The son of real estate tycoon Angus McDonough (Robert Knepper), one would think that Blaine would have had it made growing up.Quite the opposite. Suffering from depression, Blaines mother took her own life after her husband disregarded all her pleas for help. This led to Blaine being cared for by Frieda Bader; an abusive nanny who killed Blaines dog, beat him, and forced him to clean the kitchen floor with his tongue after he tracked in dirt.Upon hearing Blaine recount the abuse, Angus did nothing to prevent it.Growing up in the 90s, Blaine was an avid fan of Nirvana, and its front man Kurt Cobain. When his hero took his own life in the same manner as his mother, Blaine became quite disillusioned. The only person in Blaines life who treated him with any love was his grandfather, whose business Angus took over before committing him to hospice. This only served to reaffirm Blaines animosity towards his fatherBlaine briefly attended college; The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. A private Ivy League business university located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This something which Angus was willing to take credit for; attributing it to the strings he pulled rather than Blaines natural knack for business. Though he was a bit of a wild child, Blaine was intelligent; and convinced his father to fund a revolutionary widget he was developing. Angus relented after Blaine managed to hide his hatred for him for weeks. Yet when his sons entrepreneurial endeavor failed, Angus cut him off and considered him a failure.Having made some connections on the party scene, Blaine turned to dealing drugs for Seattle crime lord Stacey Boss as a way of maintaining his luxurious lifestyle. His designated territory was Chinatown. At an all time low, Blaine began sampling his own product. One such instance was at the boat party where he became a zombie after taking Utopium, but not before met Olivia Moore. During their encounter Blaine sexually harassed her, before later scratching her while in full on zombie mode and turning her into a zombie as well. After the fact, Blaine seemed to show genuine remorse for both, and appeared hurt at her distrust of him. After failing to drown his sorrows, Blaine chose to embrace his monstrous side and turned his one night stand Jackie into the first client of his brain extortion racket.Upon being accosted by former running buddies Dougie and Hutch, Blaine killed them both in self defense and found the inspiration to launch a new business endeavor. Turning Seattle citizens into zombies and charging them 25K a month for the brains needed to function.Initially, he and his crew killed homeless teens from Helton Shelter to acquire these brains. Blaine still isnt sure how much of it was the influence of the brains he sampled, or how much of the depravity was his own. It's interesting to note that in Season One, we never saw Blaine have a vision or adapt the traits of those whose brains he consumed. As he didnt seem to show remorse, it would seem he didnt partake in his own product; and continued consuming the brains of his competition in the Seattle Underworld. After Major Lilywhite killed the staff of his Meat Cute front, and Liv Moore injected him with Dr. Ravi Chakrabartis attempt at a zombie cure; resulting in Blaine becoming hums once more.Blaine stopped killing to obtain his brains, and purchased the Shady Plots funeral home. While he still charged clients for brains, the fact he couldnt increase his client base was something he made up for by running a new form of Utopium (Lucky U) out of the basement of his establishment.During this time, Blaines father (who had he previously turned into a zombie) attempted to take over Blaines business. In retaliation, Blaine put his grandfather out of his misery by smothering him with a pillow. He planned to feed his grandfathers brain to Angus out of spite/revenge, forcing him to take on his own fathers morals and love for Blaine.Major Lilywhite kidnapped Angus before this was possible; and Blaine was forced to reconcile the fact that while his business was safe, he had killed the only person who had ever cared about him for nothing.Blaine eventually recovered Angus after realizing a stipulation in the latters will, in which everything would be left to the aforementioned Frau Beider should he meet a suspicious end. The last time Angus was seen, Blaine was having him tortured until he was willing to ratify his will. Interestingly enough, Angus claimed he knew Blaine didnt have the stomach to torture him personally. Instead, he allowed his employees (who Angus had earlier victimized) the honor of the job. While under the cure, Blaine had the ability to detect zombies in his proximity. After Stacey Boss realized Blaine had become competition (and was working with Peyton Charles, the ADA and Livs best friend whom Blaine had fallen for) he had Blaines throat slashed before burying him in the woods.Thankfully for Blaine, Chakrabartis cure wasnt permanent; and he reverted to his zombie state. However, Ravi disclosed that after the cure wore off on one of his test rats, the rat died within days.Getting his affairs in order, Blaine gave his underlings the order to continue providing brains to his clients (claiming it was in humanitys best interest) and to stop running drugs (for their own well being) - instructions which they ignored once Blaine took a hail mary plea in the form of another one of Chakrabartis attempts at a cure. While successful, the cure left Blaine a retrograde amnesiac. His blissful ignorance was short lived, as his lieutenants took advantage of his state and took over his business. Learning the truth about his past from Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti, Blaine became something of an ally to he and Liv Moore. Defying orders, he sullied the two with a brain when for Liv to consume when the two were barred from their jobs at the morgue. When Mr. Boss realized Blaine was alive, he kidnapped Peyton Charles in order to lure Blaine out. Despite the risks, Blaine was guilted into rescuing her upon learning of their past involvement. Ravi, however, questions his motives; as he went back on his word and went to save Peyton without him. In the process, he received both the glory and Peyton's gratitude.PERSONALITY:Blaine shows a complete lack of remorse for creating zombies. With a very astute mind for business, he sees them as only new customers and the rich ones as endless vats of money. While initially Blaine asks Ravi to cure him, he enjoys being a zombie seeing as it has improved his stance in the world. While he appreciates food and sex, he considered himself a nobody prior to becoming a zombie; furthermore claiming that Zombie Blaine 'was the man.In spite of this, he injected himself with the second cure rather than risk remaining a reverted zombie, and wasting away ala Ravis test rat.Initially he was shown is not to have any true feelings of companionship, even when with Jackie. He also treats those he works with at Meat Cute as inferiors. However it was revealed he kept in touch with Scott E after the boat party massacre, visiting his friend at the mental hospital and challenging him to games of chess. It is possible Blaine felt a kinship with Scott as they were both boat party survivors, and both had abusive upbringings. While Blaine initially meant to manipulate Peyton Charles to pursue a case against Mr. Boss, the two grew close and Blaine appeared to have gained genuine affection for her. When she announced her plan to leave the District Attorneys office, Blaine urged her not to quit; not for the sake of his plans nor jailing Boss, but because he wasnt worth throwing away she worked so hard to earn. When Peyton ended their fling, Blaine actually appeared to be genuinely upset, but obeyed her wishes and left her be.Blaine is power-hungry and greedy as shown by his past career choice as a drug dealer and current job as leader of the zombie underworld. He is portrayed as cunning and manipulative. He manages to start a business foundation while taming the zombie outbreak. He is even shown to be charming, when he wants to be, as he seduces both Jackie and Peyton while working his way around many others; even fooling Clive Babineaux and Dale Bozzio during their respective first meetingsUpon taking the Second Zombie Cure, Blaine becomes a retrograde amnesiac. While he retains his wit and proficiency with firearms, he has no memories of his past crimes and the experiences that led him to crime. In fact, he was horrified to learn of them. While underling Don E. took over his business, Blaine defied him in order to help Liv and provide her with brains. When Stacey Boss learned he was alive and kidnapped Peyton Charles in an attempt to lure her out, Blaine went to save her despite initial hesitance. While he allowed Ravi to tag along after initial hesitance, Blaine went in to save Peyton alone, using night vision goggles Ravi had brought to his attention. Upon seeing Blaine comfort Peyton, Ravi appeared dejected and slightly jealous; hinting at further animosity and rivalry in spite of Blaines changed ways. Show less «
