Ardeth Bay is a character from the 1999 movie The Mummy and the 2001 movie The Mummy Returns. The name is borrowed from the 1932 film The Mummy, in which it was an alias used by Imhotep in 1930s Cairo. In the later films, he is a friend of the O'Connell family and also as a Medjai, a warrior for God descended from the bodyguards of Pharaoh Seti I. His goal is to prevent the evil priest Imhotep from rising from the dead to destroy the world.Ardeth first appears when Rick O'Connell is defeated at Hamunaptra after fighting off an attack from Tuareg warriors. Ardeth appears on a rock cliff overlooking the fight. When O'Connell survives the fight, he chooses to let the heat of the desert kill him rather than kill him himself.Three years later, Ardeth Bay watches as O'Connell returns to Hamunaptra with others. Ardeth comments that O'Connell is a strong man to have survived a trek through the desert. The next night, Ardeth and his fellow warriors attack the camp where O'Connell and his companions are staying. When Ardeth attacks Jonathan, he is attacked by Rick. When Rick turns to shoot another Madjai, Ardeth knocks the pistol out of Rick's hand. Later when Rick threatens to kill him with a stick of dynamite, Ardeth calls off the fight. He warns Rick's party to leave by the next day; when they disregard his warning, they awaken the mummy. Ardeth eventually helps them to destroy it with the Book of LIfe and rescue Eve.Ardeth returns in the second movie to help them kill the reawakened creature. He travels with the O'Connell family throughout Egypt to find Alex, Rick and Eve's son, who has unknowingly set off a chain of events that could bring about the end of the world. Later, Ardeth gathers the Madjai armies to support Eve, Rick and Jonathan as they rescue Alex and defeat Imhotep, the Scorpion King, and the army of Anubis.Ardeth has the Madjai tattoos on his forehead, cheeks, and hands, as do all the other Madjai warriors. He uses a falcon to send messages to the other Madjai and to lead them to the army of Anubis. He called the bird his best and most clever friend. When the bird is killed, Ardeth experiences shock and grief.
