Appa is the loyal sky bison of Aang, the Avatar. Their connection is so deep they appear to share some form of energy bond, as revealed by Guru Pathik. When the monks were forced to reveal Aang's true Avatar identity to him as a 12-year-old, Aang was overwhelmed and fled with Appa. When they were caught in a storm, Aang used a combination of water-and-airbending to freeze them both in a sphere of ice, where they remained, alive, for the next 100 years.They were unwittingly released by two members of the Southern Water Tribe: the Waterbender Katara and her non-bending brother, a young warrior named Sokka. Aang must find the Master benders of the other elements, Fire, Water, and Earth, in order to assume the true mantle of the Avatar and restore balance to the world. Appa is his companion and transportation in this quest. Sokka and Katara join Aang aboard Appa on this quest.The pair is fiercely devoted to each other, and during times when they are separated Aang will stop at nothing to retrieve his faithful companion. Foes sometimes try to use Appa to get to Aang, knowing how strong their bond is. Later in their journey they are joined by Momo, a winged lemur.Appa accompanies Aang and his group even after they enter the Fire Nation. However, in order to make sure that he doesn't give away Aang's identity, Aang covers Appa with clouds as a disguise while in flight.Background: Despite being a large wingless mammal, Appa is able to fly by airbending. His methods of airbending including using his tail and his mouth. Although he is capable for flying for extended periods if he has to, he usually needs to rest periodically. He has carried up to seven people on his back at one time.He and Aang met when Aang was just six years old and they bonded when Aang offered Appa and apple.
