In the remake of the original classic, the character of Alan Smith parallels that of Donald Thompson, who was Nancy's police chief father in the original movie, although in the remake he is Quentin Smith's father. Alan Smith was the primary instigator in the death of Freddy, as he threw the burning gas can into the boiler room to flush Freddy out, as it did not seem in the film that murdering Freddy was his primary objective once the angry parents chased Freddy down and cornered him.
