Agent Lucy Kazdin's one and only appearance in the X-Files, was in the Season 2 episode, Duane Barry (Ep05). Kazdin is the agent in charge of the Hostage Rescue Team entrusted with getting Duane Barry to free the four people he's holding at gunpoint in a travel agency. Mulder is called into the negotiations with Barry, when it becomes apparent that the escaped mental patient is ranting about alien abduction. Although extremely skeptical, Kazdin enlists Mulder's help in the hope that his background in the phenomena will connect with Duane Barry and eventually lead to him releasing the hostages. Kazdin is portrayed as an agent who operates by the book . She is very critical of Mulder's approach once he's in the travel agency with Duane Barry. Kazdin speaks to Mulder remotely and fears for the safety of the hostages. She states at a certain point, He's gonna push him right over the edge , suggesting that Mulder is feeding into Barry's psychosis. Nonetheless, after a somewhat belittling start, Kazdin develops a clear respect for Mulder after his efforts in freeing the hostages and risking his own life. Nowhere is this more clear, then when Kazdin calls Mulder to come down to Duane Barry's guarded hospital room. After thanking him for putting it on the line , Kazdin reveals that she has actually called Mulder to the hospital for another reason. Since learning of Mulder's devout subscription to alien phenomenon and hearing the claims made by Barry during the negotiation, Kazdin saw fit to inform Mulder that Duane Barry showed signs of unusual testing procedures, which were consistent with the claims he made during the hostage scenario. She gives Mulder details of pieces of metal found in Duane Barry's mouth, sinus cavity and abdomen, as well as holes in his teeth which couldn't have been drilled with any current dental equipment. As Kazdin delivers this information to Mulder, it appears as though she realizes the importance it will hold to him. Furthermore, there is a clear implication that these revelations have led to her somewhat questioning her own beliefs. As rigid as she seems to be initially, Kazdin appears to be somewhat bemused by the findings and conveys this in her tone whilst talking to Mulder. At no stage though does she herself look to become a crusader. She simply delivers the news to Mulder and concludes her X-Files associations with, Anyway, I just thought you should know .
