Oscar-winning Danish director Laurits Munch-Petersen was born on the island of Bornholm and raised in Copenhagen. From an early age he started painting and drawing and believed to be a painter like his father. But he realized that this job was too lonely and imagined that film making would be like painting, just with people as colors. At age 15 he lived in Mexico for one year with his parents. This stay inspired him to go back 7 years later to shoot his first professional film "The Circle" (1996) in the desert of Oaxaca. At age 29 he won an Oscar for his film "Between Us" from The National Film School of Denmark. The year after he made first his feature film "Ambulance" (2005) for Nordisk Film and has since written and directed several feature films, documentaries and TV-series. He believes that fiction is staged fantasy and documentary is staged reality. Only subjective truth exists. In 2021 Laurits' debut feature film "Ambulance" is being remade by Hollywood director Michael Bay ("Armageddon", "Pearl Harbour", "Transformers") starring Jake Gyllenhaal ("Brokeback Mountain", "Nightcrawler", "Nocturnal Animals").
