Served as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam in 1968 - 1969. Served as a battalion intelligence officer in Iraq in 2003 - 2004. retired from the military in 2009 as a lieutenant colonel.In 2013, he received the Bronze Star Medal for service in Iraq and the Air Medal for Valor for service in Vietnam.
