In what is claimed to be the first remote live TV coverage of a breaking news event, Hetherington reported from the scene of the explosion of electroplating plant on Pico Boulevard on 27 February 1947. He served as co-host of the KTLA's pioneering weekly live-remote broadcast show, "The City at Night." Hetherington also appeared in films and worked in advertising.
