Hany Farid was born on February 10, 1966 in Mulheim Germany. His parents, originally from Egypt, emigrated to the United States in 1968. Hany grew up in Rochester, NY. He studied Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Rochester and completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania. Following a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in Brain and Cognitive Neuroscience at MIT, he joined the faculty in Computer Science at Dartmouth College.
