Son of vaudevillian Billy K. Wells. He studied at New York University and began as a writer for radio ('The Jack Pearl Show','Lux Radio Theater'), coming under contract to MGM in 1943 as a screenwriter. He soon acquired a reputation for his deft touch and inventiveness in light comedy and musicals. Wells won the Academy Award for Best Original Story and Screenplay for Designing Woman (1957), a sophisticated marital comedy starring Lauren Bacall and Gregory Peck. He also co-wrote Take Me Out to the Ball Game (1949) with Harry Tugend, an MGM musical with Gene Kelly, nominated by the Writer's Guild of America for an award as Best Written American Musical. He produced several of Esther Williams's films, including Jupiter's Darling (1955). George Wells retired in 1970 and in 1982 wrote 'Taurus', a 'novel of erotic horror'. Show less «
