After an out-of-town tryout in Seattle, Hairspray opened on Broadway in August 2002 at the Neil Simon Theater. Dysart originated the role of Gilbert and understudied the role of Seaweed J. Stubbs, and performed on the original Broadway cast recording. He later joined the Broadway revival cast of A Chorus Line, at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, as a Principal standby for the roles of Mark, Paul, Ritchie and Larry.
