Drummond Marais was born on 17 October in 1950 in Rhodesia. He dabbled in visual art and dramatic art. Some of his memorable theatre moments were for the Natal Performing Arts Council in Sweeney Todd, Sweet Charity, Candide and Queen. On his Facebook page, Drummond comments: "I've been in SHOWBIZ since the age of 6 - (am now 61, go figure!!) - having explored an 'mastered' virtually every medium within the 'performing arts'! I've lived as an openly PROUD GAY man for over 30 years. I have a wonderful relationship with my son Matthew (now 35) and claim to have been one of the first 100 gay men in this country to have exerted his 'human right' to legal marital status with a member of the same sex. I am a very contented 61 yr old!" At 13:50 on the 25th of December 2012, he died. His partner took to Facebook to break the news. The next year, he was nominated for a Naledi Award along with the rest of his cast of A Pocket Oliver Twist. At the awards, it is tradition to pay tribute to South Africa's past actors and in 2013, the year after his nomination, his photo was shown among SA's legends.
